Holidays with Pay

I love writing about my job because I loved it,
and it was a particularly interesting one when I was a young man.
It was like holidays with pay to me.

For years I used to bore my wife over lunch
with stories about funny incidents.

James Herriot, veterinarian/novelist

Sounds like someone had fun telling stories and I know we all can relate. We want to be engaging in person and on the page. While we think we are busy boring our family and friends with our tales it is quite possible that our love of writing can pay off.

Sara Blakely, creator and founder of Spanx said on Donny Deutsch’s The Big Idea, that she kept her idea secret for over a year from family and friends. She didn’t want the idea to be lessened by the words and beliefs of others.

I don’t know if James Herriot’s wife was really bored with his tales but if she was, I’m certain she would be happy that it didn’t dissuade him from becoming a novelist.

Now for the comment about holidays with pay, I guess writing was probably a bit more lucrative for a country vet than being a vet. I like the sentiment though. So do you feel like being a writer and following your dream is like holidays with pay at least, even if you’re not paid?
