October 3 marks the birthday of Henri Alain-Fournier (October 3, 1886), a French novelist, his one novel, Le Grand Meaulnes published 1913 before he died in war at the age of 28. It also marks the birthdays of James Alfred Wight Herriot, better known as James Herriot, veterinarian and novelist; and Angeles Alvarino De Leira, biologist, oceanographer and writer. Both were born on October 3, 1916.

Events in history on this date include the syndicated newspaper serial story The Red Badge of Courage being published as a book in 1895. In 1910 comedian and future actor/artist Charlie Chaplin arrives in the US on a British vaudeville tour of the states with the likes of Stan Laurel.
