Angeles Alvarino De Leira

Angeles Alvarino De Leira, biologist, oceanographer and writer, wrote Antarctic Chaetognatha: U.S. Antarctic Research Program Biology of the Antarctic Seas. The Book of Latina Women by Sylvia Mendoza tells us that Angeles’ love of the ocean started in her father’s library. Although the Spanish Institution of Oceanography usually banned women Angeles Alvarino DeLeira was able to practice her science, her specialty zooplankton, and she went on to become the first woman to serve as a scientist on a British research vessel.
